Événements francohpones
Frey Theatre, The College of Saint Catherine
- Albertine en cinq temps
- On Friday February 23 and Saturday February 24, 2007, College of Saint Catherine's Frey Theatre will offer Twin Cities' theatre-goers the unique opportunity of experiencing one of the celebrated works of one of Québec’s most celebrated dramatists, Michel Tremblay’s Albertine en cinq temps — in its original French version.
- Presented by La Chandelle Verte (chandelleverte.com), a troupe which produces theatre in French at campuses throughout the United States, Albertine en cinq temps depicts the remarkable working class protagonist at five different periods of her life. Each decade of her existence betrays choices Albertine made, which hint at the circumstances that impacted the lives of socially marginalized women living in the blue-collar Plateau neighborhood of Montreal from the 1940s to the 1980s. In Albertine’s world, men are absent, have disappeared, or, like her husband, have died in the World War. Women, particularly her mother and sister, are what define her world view and are her raison d’être, and yet her inability to handle her own daughter, Thérèse, and her son, Marcel, generate the play’s persistent question, What has happened?
- Michel Tremblay revolutionized Québec playwriting in the 1960s by the introduction of working class characters and language into dramas like the much heralded Les belles-sœurs. With this play, first produced in 1968, Tremblay opened up the theatre to realms of experience hitherto untouched by Québec dramatists. And Albertine en cinq temps continues the exploration of this new territory. This production promises a unique, powerful evening of theatre to Minnesota-based francophones and francophiles. The one-hour production is followed by a 30 minute question-answer session.
